Chinese is a language (or language family) that forms part of the Sino-Tibetan language family. About 1.3 billion people, 16% of the world’s population, speak some form of Chinese as their mother tongue.
It is spoken mainly in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau, Malaysia and by the huge overseas Chinese communities.
Official Chinese (Standard Mandarin), based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin, was adopted in the 1930s and is now an official language of both the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan), one of the four official languages of Singapore , and one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
