The Portuguese language (português) is a Latinized Romance language of the Indo-European language family. It appeared in present-day Galicia (Spain) and northern Portugal. It is the official language in Portugal, but also in eight other countries that are former Portuguese colonies.
It is the second of the Romance languages in terms of number of speakers, after Spanish.
Around 210 to 215 million speakers have Portuguese as their mother tongue and the total number of speakers is estimated at 240 million, making Portuguese commonly listed as the seventh most spoken language in the world and the most spoken language in South America and the second most spoken Romance language language in Africa and the most widely spoken Romance language in Oceania, Japan and mainland Asia.
